If you're a reader of this blog last season before my MIA, I'm sure you have come across an entry bout some issues with my name. Well, in short someone thought that i refuse to disclose my name when i say my surname is LOW. Of coz, context does matter. Australian really find my name weird i suppose. So, that was that.
Well back in Msia people used to call me Wei Kiat or just Kiat which i'm pretty much used to it already and i guess it's easy to pronounce isn't it? Plus, the name is so common you can find tonnes of Wei Kiat's around. BUT, this isn't true in Melb as OZ often finds it difficult to pronounce my name and yeah, after so many times experiencing people having a hard time pronouncing Wei Kiat, I give up...
So, the first attempt (which was on the previous entry) was to ask them just to call me LOW and it became a joke, hahahhahahha. And so, the moment where I have to introduce myself comes again when i apply for job. To cut the story short, when they ask me what they should call me after looking at 3 CONFUSING, HARD TO PRONOUNCE, WEIRD LOOKING words, I took a few seconds contemplating and replied:" Wei!"
and this is what happen in the days to come and keep coming,
In the office,
1. Anyway, wei, can you please... ( when someone said that, they will definitely pause for a moment n we'll have eye contact and smile and then well continue...)
2. "Where's .....?" " Oh, This 'way'!" (and I was busying with my work and I thought someone call me, zzzzz)
3. "There must be a 'way' to solve this design, let's see..." (and again...)
4. "wei, shen me shi? *speaking mandarin on the phone*...." (and again..)
5. so this 'wei', that 'wei', 'wei wei wei'....
and all these are not enough, an even better one is a full conversation bout 'WEI', yes me.wtf.
(conversation below happened in the office when I went back to Msia for holidays)
A: "Where's Wei?
B: "Well, he's a 'Wei'!"
A: "No 'Wei'!"
This is Wei too cool!

What 'G' in the lift means?
As promised, an update... but not yet a summary of my MIA.
Instead, here's something more current:
Moments after working hour, I packed my stuff and leave the office. Pressed the lift button and entered the lift car like usual, press 'G', the lift door closes, and I waited.
blalblabla, 7th floor, 6th, 5... and 3 Italians I supposed entered. Here comes the interesting part. For some unknown reason, the light on 'G' went off and one of them ask, "so which floor we heading?"
and the other man said, " G-spot! yeah, that's where we all love to go!"
3rd Man:" That's always the easiest to press on isn't it!"
and everyone in the lift, including me, burst out laughing as the door opens....

Come to think of it, it is almost unavoidable for us to use abbreviation to increase the effectiveness of communication nowadays. effectiveness as in speed. yes, with 2day's technology allowing us to be connected to the other part of the world almost instantly, time is gold. Since the introduction of ICQ to our life, followed by msn oh and what do we have here, SMS... how often do u use abbreviations? So, what's wrong. In fact, shouldn't it be the next communication patterns/representation/symbols whatever u like to call it.
take this as an example:
I will see you tonight at 7pm
and
I'll c u 2nite 7pm'
its 29 characters vs 18 char. which is capable of saving u some money during smsing since every 160 char is equivalent to one msg. so why not?
2nd, its about speed. Imagine u're on the go walking down the street rushing to meet your client and you need to send this sms to your gf/bf, lesser character means faster rite?
3rd, abbreviation get things done doesn't it. both will give you the exact same result unless the person tat reads it don't understand la (tell me, who don't understand? knock his head!)
It's fascinating how words have evolved since the introduction of ICQ. btw, who creates all these abbreviation?hmmm...
and the best part, there's even development of expression included nowadays, and with graphic and multimedia enhancement, look what do we have today, emoticons... heck what;s next?
'default' abbreviations:
wtf = what the fuck
wtfbnn = ask eevon la hahhahaha
lol = laughing out loud
night = nite
brb = be right back
gtg = got to go
mia = missing in action
btw = by the way
because = coz
and lots lots more.... you name it
Introduction of expressions since ICQ cannot see face ma rite, nor sound:
:-) = happy
:D = grin
:-( = sad, unhappy, disappointed
:-I = sesat face
:'-( = crying
@!^$*^$&!^#*&@ = this wan lao fu zhi comic book introduce wan
oh, and you got all sorts of laughing 'sounds' like muahaha, bwwahahha, kakaka, hehe, hahahahhahahaha....
and recently we even have emoticons, well, dunnit explain rite hahaha (note: however effective emoticons are as a communication tools, over use tends to be annoying, seriously!)
so this is it, the digitally revolutionized world where communication is almost seemless and time is everything. who knows, maybe one day Oxford might come out with an abbreviated english dictionary or Dummies might add a new collection for u with abbreviated english for Dummies. and this informal language might be 'legalized' and an sms with all the 'c u 2nite','i'll b there in a sec', 'btw, XXX is mia since wed' might be evidence useful in the court.
i guess i still sotsot la. so you can ignore me but hey, if you understand what i'm saying and disagree with me, pls note, i'm blogging with ABBREVIATED ENGLISH! and it proves that its an effective communicating tool coz u understand me. kthanxbyecunxttime!
